The best victories come in twos, with Archier and Winter Architecture crowned The Living Space of 2022

  •   7 September 2022

Among the many exemplary homes that comprised The Living Space category, there was not just one winner this year but two! The INDE.Awards jury recognised two outstanding projects as each was declared category winner – Bermagui Beach House by Winter Architecture and Corner House by Archier both located in Australia.

As supporter of The Living Space, Gaggenau applauds great design and helps create it with outstanding products that enhance every project. In the knowledge that fine projects require excellent products, Gaggenau makes its mark just as the two The Living Space winners have made theirs.

Reflecting on both projects, Robert Warner, general manager of retail sales, BSH Home Appliances, remarks, “The Corner House impressively uses modest size to its advantage. Archier has utilised what would normally be considered a challenging site, into a meaningful series of small living spaces interconnected by art gallery-like hallways. Creativity and practicality were both equally focused upon and intersecting external and internal environments- with the house turned inward and centred on an internal landscape was beyond anything we had seen on a site such as this before!

The intentionality of the Bermagui Beach House placement is inspiring. We are so impressed by the use of the surrounding environment to help shape a narrative for both the external and internal of the house. Winter Architecture has to be celebrated for its ability to so elegantly blend landscape with the textures, tones and materials of this beautiful, Australian home.”

While each house has been perfectly located in its surrounds, they both speak of pared-back comfort and style that is timeless. Warner comments, “For the Bermagui Beach House, influence and connection to its natural surrounds are profound. There is strong design inspiration, not just to complement the external environment, but to create a beautiful internal detail. Winter Architecture proves that the future of design lies in seamlessly blending the architecture into the surrounding environment to create a strong and long-lasting connection to place for all present and future residents.

The Corner House proves that future living doesn’t have to be large-scale in order to ooze architectural brilliance. Design is moving away from making singular, grand design statements, to thoughtful planning and spatial orientation – with focus on creating intelligent living experiences.”

While the idea of obvious uber luxury has taken a back seat, Corner House and Bermagui Beach House are both refined in detail, spatial flow and facility, taking cues from nature and creating quality design as Warner concludes, “Much like the Bermagui Beach House and the Corner House, Gaggenau appliances take inspiration from the surroundings of which they are designed and created. In the depths of the Black Forest, a hammer mill and nail forge were born in the hamlet of Gaggenau in 1683.

To this day, Gaggenau takes inspiration from the moody Black Forest surroundings to create classic and timeless designs. We are proud that we do not subscribe to short-term trends; instead, the carefully crafted design of every Gaggenau appliance means we always have one eye on the sustainable future. How will the kitchen look in five, ten or twenty years – and beyond?“

Yes, the best design is about creating for today with the future in mind and the winners of the 2022 INDE.Awards have both achieved this vision.

Congratulations to Winter Architecture and Archier for projects that are site-specific, designed for life and living and contribute beautifully to the landscape.
