Fairmont Tokyo

BAR Studio (Interior Design) + Maki and Associates and Shimizu Corporation (Architecture)
Japan

The design for Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ debut property in Japan draws on the location’s intriguing meeting of urban and natural environments in Tokyo’s Shibaura waterfront district, forging links between the dynamic city and the bay.

Occupying the 35th to 43rd floors of a mixed-use tower plus four lower levels, the hotel offers striking views across Tokyo Bay and the iconic Rainbow Bridge. Fairmont Tokyo comprises 217 guest rooms and suites, wellness facilities and diverse hospitality venues, including a rooftop wedding chapel and a series of interconnected drinking and dining spaces on the upper floor.

The design language draws on warm tones, tactile materiality and intimate lighting. A restrained colour palette and locally sourced finishes connect to the location, while contemporary gestures reinforce Shibaura’s unique expressions of urban life, light and water.

Throughout, the interior design strongly engages with views and cultivates a connection with nature that has a rich heritage in Japan. Above all, Fairmont Tokyo celebrates a sense of ritual, allowing visitors to savour both sociable spaces and a serene sanctuary.

The design concept is deeply connected to place but also speaks to Fairmont’s international heritage encouraging global exchange and appealing to both locals and guests.
