Alchemist Aoyama

Located in Aoyama, Tokyo, this Alchemist café space is designed as an interplay of structure and serenity, a calm counterpoint to the intensity of the surrounding city. Shaped by intention and purpose, the project reimagines the café as a refuge from the city, built for pause and reflection, through the ritual of coffee.

On the ground floor, guests are welcomed with a pavilion-like structure, defined by a series of timber columns and beams that establishes both a sense of order and atmosphere. A a rhythmic clarity is evoked and creates a feeling of warmth, openness and shelter . Within this structure, one can observe the careful actions of the baristas and also browse a range of products displayed on shelves that are integrated into the framework.

A spiral staircase leads to the upper level, where the mood becomes more contemplative. A lush linear landscaped planter anchors the space, softly illuminated by a suspended light box above. A continuous bench trace the room’s perimeter, allowing customers to sit facing inwards, looking towards the planter which forms a calming focal point away from the city, creating a sanctuary-like quality, a measured counterpoint to Aoyama’s urban intensity.
