Daniel Cook
After capturing an extremely rare phenomenon of a ‘Surfing Whale’, Daniel’s photography career was thrust into the spotlight in 2020. The spectacle of a Bryde’s Whale riding waves at Lennox Head on NSW’s North Coast became an internet sensation, being featured on esteemed platforms including World Surf League, Today Show Australia, Daily Mail and numerous other media outlets across the globe.
Daniel’s photography has remained authentic to its outdoor/water theme, capturing breath-taking images of sun-drenched ocean environments and outdoor adventures. However, building on his 20+ years in the Architectural industry, many of his current subjects are of the urban environment. His Architectural Photography portfolio includes stunning images of Architectural Interiors, high-end homes and commercial fit-outs, joinery features and designer details which communicate the look and feel of a space.
Daniel’s photography toolkit is diverse, including waterproof housings, drone photography and studio lighting. Water/Surf and Portrait Photography feature heavily in Daniel’s personal work.
Completing his Diploma in Photography & Digital Imaging in 2023, Daniel is an Image Makers Association Australia Emerging Member.
The Project
NSW Birth Deaths & Marriages was strategically split into 3 separate shoots, spanning February and March 2024.
Ground and L1 Floor North was completed in one shoot. The focus of this project, Ground Floor South, the wing designed for wedding ceremonies with a reception area, private rooms and function space, was split into two shoots to capture the custom-designed fabric ceiling and integrated backlighting at different times of day. During daylight hours, the west facing windows beam sunlight into the reception and private rooms. Sunlight illuminates the feature ceiling, furniture and timber battens, casting shadows across the room.
In the evening, the integrated backlighting glows through the custom-designed fabric ceiling, creating a vivid visual that flows from reception, up the hall and to the private suites. By capturing both day and night hours, the look, feel and transformation of the space is enhanced.
NSW Births Deaths & Marriages is a beautifully designed and executed project, and a pleasure to capture.
