The Gunnery + Artspace
Australia

Katherine Lu
Katherine Lu is an architectural photographer based in Sydney. Her work is regularly published and her interest lies in documenting how the built environment can shape and influence us. She believes that good architecture has the ability to improve our quality of life and by designing thoughtful spaces, we can significantly impact the wellbeing of its occupants.

The Project
The 120 year-old Gunnery warehouse at Woolloomooloo, New South Wales has been thoughtfully transformed into a cultural hub for established and emerging artists. The Artspace continues to live there but with a renewed and expanded gallery space, artist studios are multi-purpose rooms. The challenge of the brief has always been to showcase the considered work of the architects in preserving the heritage aspects, and to highlight its contribution in the wider historical context. The new space acknowledges this, but also prepares it for future inhabitants.
