Serotina

Serotina is a sculptural stool exploring the connections between furniture design, material expression and hand-making processes.

Crafted from American cherrywood (Prunus serotina), the stool combines a solid timber base with a punch-needle textile seat developed through a slow, hands-on process. The piece brings together two fundamentally different ways of working: the precision and permanence of hardwood furniture making and the softness and adaptability of fibre-based handwork.

The main body is a bold, minimal form that highlights the natural grain of the timber. In contrast, the upholstered surface forms a layered textile relief. Fibre colours echo the warm cherrywood tonal range, while variations in loop height create a tactile landscape that invites interaction.

Serotina is made in Melbourne using responsibly sourced hardwoods and natural fibres, with modular components designed for repair and longevity.

Working with both timber and fibre allowed the design to evolve throughout the process. By combining traditional woodworking with textile experimentation, the piece proposes an alternative approach to contemporary furniture design where material sensitivity, craft processes and emotional connection are central.
