Recycled Paper Lantern for Readings

In early conversations with client Readings, a significant waste issue was identified – misprinted books sent for pulping.

KTA + Readings engaged Edward Linacre Studio (ELS), specialists in developing recycled materials and lighting design, to develop a viable paper lantern material and lantern design with Ambience who provided the technical lighting application and engineering.

Over the course of 12 months, the pulp material and pulping process were continuously refined to ensure a balance of strength and consistency of thickness—qualities essential for achieving the desired light transmission.

ELS developed a suite of both novel and adapted fabrication processes, drawing inspiration from the traditional Japanese papermaking technique of Nagashi-zuki. Custom Suketa frames and pulping baths were constructed, with the approach retooled at each stage to accommodate changes in scale. Ultimately, it was the hand-crafted nature of the process that resonated most with the client. The natural variations in each sheet of paper became a defining artistic element of the work.

Due to the effectiveness of the lantern, no supplementary lighting was required in the zone, resulting in a sculptural installation that not only enhances wayfinding and reading areas but also exemplifies the creative reuse of waste materials.
