Other Matter® is a revolutionary architectural membrane made from a living, regenerative substance: algae. Entirely organic, biodegradable, reusable and recyclable, the non-petrochemical, non-toxic polymer is a patent-pending innovation.
Developed by artist and designer Jessie French, Other Matter can be hung as sheets, applied as a film, or poured directly onto smooth surfaces such as metal or glass. The material transforms spaces with its beguiling texture and diffuse luminescence. Its otherworldly patterning is reminiscent of metamorphic rock, produced within a rapid timeframe. The pieces are portals into imaginary landscapes—where the mining of non-renewable resources has become obsolete.
Other Matter is crafted to suit each project’s particular requirements. Possible in any colour or transparency, with a broad range of bespoke artistic patterning options, the cured sheets can be cut into any shape or size. The product can be printed on, and machined to any level of detail. Without need for adhesives in many instances, the pieces can be repositioned and repurposed, leaving no residue on substrata. Operating within a closed-loop, zero-waste system, Other Matter can be melted back into liquid state and reformed over and over again. It is ideal for exhibitions, events, retail environments, architectural features and spatial installations.
