IKARE

IKARE is a flat-pack furniture project that reimagines the emotional and material value of self-assembled design. The name “IKARE” plays on the word “IKEA,” referencing the global brand that made furniture accessible but also disposable. By subtly shifting the meaning to “I Care,” the project emphasises a more intentional and lasting relationship between users and their objects. Rooted in the psychological concept known as the “IKEA effect,” IKARE leverages the idea that assembling furniture fosters a deeper sense of ownership. However, instead of using inexpensive materials typical of mass-produced furniture, IKARE is crafted from solid hard maple—enhancing both its durability and tactile presence.

The design features precise, tool-free joinery that celebrates the act of building. Inspired by traditional Korean joinery and the cultural form of the soban (소반), IKARE bridges contemporary minimalism with heritage craft. It is furniture meant not only to serve a function but to be experienced—inviting users to care, connect, and keep.
