A Commune Rhapsody is a holistic environment that seamlessly integrates architecture, culture and nature to create inspirational student accommodation. As an integral part of a tertiary education campus master plan in Cambodia, the project fosters a holistic approach to education by harmonising built spaces with organic hardscape and lush landscapes.

The project is deeply connected to the school, not only through a physical link but also through its architectural form, which visually embraces an open space of an academic institution. The design weaves traditional textiles colours and patterns into various architectural elements, including floor finishes, sun shading, façades, wall treatments and ceiling details. This infusion of cultural motifs grounds the hostel in its local context while creating a distinct sense of place.

The spaces are interwoven seamlessly to connect different functional areas together. A free form terraced podium anchors the project, housing communal spaces such as a gym, cafeteria, and social lounges. Beyond that, three residential blocks rise above, offering well-ventilated study areas, dining spaces and leisure zones. The design prioritises social interaction by incorporating look-out pods, pocket gardens and open terraces, transforming green spaces into vibrant social realms throughout the building.

Ecological sustainability is central to the project. Skylights within the podium illuminate interior spaces with natural daylight, reducing energy consumption. Strategic building orientation along the north-south axis minimises heat gain, while open courtyards and natural ventilation strategies enhance comfort and air circulation. The use of locally sourced materials, such as bamboo for concrete form works and natural leaves for wall imprints reflect Cambodian architectural traditions while promoting environmental responsibility.

By merging culture, environment, and social well-being, A Commune Rhapsody redefines student living, offering a harmonious and immersive experience that supports the personal growth and a strong sense of community.
