Responding to the vastness of site, Kallara Cabin explores the human condition and what it means to occupy site meaningfully. At the centre of the scheme is the campfire, where architect and client initially met, set up camp and discussed the project brief. The architecture, in form and spirit, finds its genesis through this ancient act of making and sharing fire, story-telling and existing within the environment as humans have for thousands of years.
Kallara Cabin is a totally off-grid sanctuary, which responds to the challenges of living in a rural Australian context. A robust, yet environmentally and economically focused building, the cabin offers occupants a heightened connection to ‘place’ and emphasises the importance of custodianship. At the building’s core is the spirit of being reductive and ‘living with less’.
