A House to Gather is a renovation and extension project designed for a young couple renowned for their hospitality. With frequent gatherings ranging from casual aperitifs to long luncheons, the project transforms a modest single-fronted workers cottage into a vibrant space for entertaining. The original home, long and narrow with a southern orientation, lacked light, open space, and a strong connection to the backyard—key needs addressed in the design.
The new two-storey extension, crafted on a tight budget, blends seamlessly with Thornbury’s patchwork of extensions. The design centres around the owners’ love of sharing meals, with a large central kitchen and dining area to accommodate two to 30 people. Skylights and strategic use of light enhance the sense of space, while custom tiles and colourful features add personality and warmth.
The home’s design is characterised by thoughtful details such as the vertical glass blocks, which bring light into the dining room and upstairs bedroom, and the use of cross-ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy to ensure an efficient and comfortable living environment. With elements that pay tribute to the owner’s late mother, the design reflects the couple’s love for family and hospitality while creating a welcoming and functional space.
