Sydney Seafood School

The reimagined Sydney Seafood School is a transformative pedagogical environment and a sensory journey through the Australian landscape. Situated at the heart of the new Sydney Fish Market district, the design is structured around a narrative of The Earth, The Land, and The Sea, guided by the “Mother Earth” poetry of Gija/Bardi descendant Nola Gregory and the market’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Architecture acts as a secondary teacher, guiding students through three distinct phases: Learning, Growth, and Enjoyment. The journey begins in the grounded warmth of the technical auditorium (the Earth) then transitioning into a collaborative, hands-on kitchen (the Land). The experience culminates in a mesmerizing communal dining area (The Sea), where shimmering mosaics and sea-inspired lighting encourage the transition from student to guest. By honoring both the technical craft and the communal joy of a shared meal, we hope to foster a lasting connection between our community and the land and sea that sustain us.
