Green Square Public School and Community Spaces, in Sydney’s Inner South, is Green Square’s new, purpose-built primary school, delivered in partnership with the City of Sydney and School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW). Completed in October 2025, the four-storey facility is designed to serve a population of 600 students from kindergarten to year six. Levels one, two and three are dedicated learning environments. At ground level, community spaces sit alongside multipurpose courts and bookable rooms shared between the school, Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) and community groups.
Green Square Public School and Community Spaces was informed by a tailored pedagogical brief that outlined a distinct approach to teaching and learning. Unlike standard models, the school articulated specific aspirations for co-teaching, student clustering and cohort organisation. The design responds with a flexible framework that supports varied configurations of classrooms, breakout spaces, wet areas and outdoor learning environments. The spaces can also be retrofitted over time, ensuring longevity as pedagogical needs evolve.
Age-appropriate learning was a key driver and the architecture supports this through a diversity of indoor/outdoor settings that are seamlessly connected on all levels. At ground level, graphic treatments, planters and seating support learning, movement, rest and play. On the rooftop, mounded and stepped surfaces and shaded playscapes engage little learners. Adjacent gardens are both productive and educational, ensuring open space balances nature and learning.
The material palette contributes to the building’s overall sense of tactility and grounded character. Pigmented concrete and terracotta provide durable, natural surfaces that support a consistent visual identity and an element of playfulness, consistent with the building’s role in nurturing and inspiring young minds. An investment in the quality of interiors and exterior spaces with gardens interwoven, strengthens student engagement. Integrated artwork also speaks to an investment in layering cultural and historical storytelling to motivate and uplift all students, staff and visitors.
