NextSense is a leading not-for-profit provider of therapy, education and cochlear implant services for children and adults with vision or hearing loss. WMK was engaged to develop a new bespoke and integrated centre for innovation located in the grounds of Macquarie University. The design response reflects the different functions of NextSense by seamlessly integrating it into two interconnected buildings that gives a physical manifestation of this multifaceted organisation’s fundamental aim to create a networked environment.
The school and preschool incorporate learning and play areas for both hearing and vision impaired students, while the Consultation building includes public areas for staff and visitors, conferencing, a business hub, and medical testing facilities. NextSense at Macquarie University heralds a new era for hearing and vision loss in Australia. The campus co-locates NextSense’s national operations, health and disability services, education, and research under one roof to support and drive better outcomes for children, adults and families living with sensory disabilities.
