A stepwell-inspired bookstore designed for discovery and engagement

The Story Project, Kolkata, reimagines the bookstore as a realm of infinite possibilities where every step invites visitors to wander, linger, and discover. Despite its compact footprint, the store leverages its seven metre height, drawing inspiration from classic libraries and the architectural legacy of Indian stepwells to create a multi-layered spatial setting.

Three levels of suspended walkways organise books, games, toys and stationery into interconnected zones while maintaining an open layout. These walkways are linked through stepped transitions that guide movement through the store while doubling as display surfaces and informal reading spots.

Constructed from slender checkered steel sheets, the suspended walkways eliminate the need for ground-level supports. This allows the interior to remain visually open while maximising usable space, with display areas integrated beneath the steps to house additional curated collections.

A warm, earthy material palette dominated by rubberwood and oakwood reflects both aesthetic richness and a commitment to ethical sourcing. Carefully positioned lighting, along with mirrored ceiling surfaces, amplifies depth and visual openness. Despite its modest footprint, The Story Project feels expansive, engaging, and inviting, where movement and storytelling come together to transform browsing into an experience of discovery.
