New Footscray Hospital

The New Footscray Hospital redefines the role of healthcare infrastructure by positioning the hospital as both a place of healing and a public asset shaped by community life. Conceived through years of advocacy from Melbourne’s local western suburbs, the project responds to a culturally diverse, rapidly growing region with a model of care that extends beyond acute treatment to support wellbeing, connection and inclusion.

Rather than a single monolithic building, the hospital is organised as five interconnected buildings around a central Village Green — a landscaped public heart that invites movement, gathering and everyday use. This open campus model creates a more welcoming and legible environment while strengthening connections between healthcare, education, wellness and community life.

Internally, daylight, landscape views, warm materiality and intuitive wayfinding reduce stress and support dignity for patients, families and staff. Cultural narratives, public art and connection to Country are embedded within the architecture and landscape, reinforcing belonging and shared ownership. The result is a progressive public project that demonstrates how design can improve health outcomes while also enriching the social life of the city and local community.
