The St. John of God Richmond Hospital redevelopment addresses the client’s vision for a patient-centred, compassionate mental health facility that fosters both individual wellbeing and a sense of community. This project responds directly to the need for a healing environment that provides clinical care within an atmosphere focused on dignity, connection, and personal growth. Central to the brief was the creation of a therapeutic space that goes beyond clinical requirements. Our design prioritises private sanctuaries within a larger community setting, offering patients a holistic healing journey that integrates solitude, social engagement, and physical wellness. Each single-occupancy room, complete with ensuite facilities, upholds patient privacy and autonomy—key elements that encourage an empowering experience. These private spaces are complemented by a range of shared areas, allowing patients the freedom to engage in self-expression or reflection as part of their recovery. The facility’s layout embraces a “village” concept, with a network of pavilions arranged around landscaped courtyards. This neighbourhood-inspired arrangement nurtures a sense of belonging, helping patients feel connected to both the space and each other. By clustering pavilions around Belmont House, a restored historic landmark, bridging the past and present, creates a grounding effect.
Communal spaces like dining areas, a café, and alfresco seating encourage interaction, helping combat isolation and fostering a supportive community that can be particularly valuable in mental health recovery. The wellness centre, featuring a gym, indoor pool, and yoga suite, integrates physical and mental health, underscoring the holistic approach that aligns with the client’s commitment to comprehensive well-being.
