The Metoreia Urban Health Centre (MUHC), located in Hanuabada, Port Moresby, is a state-of-the-art, three-level hospital serving over 60,000 residents in Moresby North West and Central Province. Officially opened in November 2024, the facility enhances healthcare accessibility in the region, particularly for maternal services, with the capacity to safely deliver 1,000 babies annually. In January 2025, the centre celebrated its first birth.

Built through a collaboration between the Australian Government, Motu Koita Assembly, United Church, and other local entities, MUHC addresses a critical gap in healthcare services. Before its construction, many residents, especially expectant mothers, had to travel long distances for essential care.

Spanning 1500-square-metres, the MUHC integrates traditional Motu Koitabu culture with modern healthcare needs. The two wings honour pioneering Motu Koitabu medical professionals, Dr. Toua Ako and Nurse Kori Mauri. The design incorporates elements like a Lakatoi sail-inspired roof, locally carved logs, and cultural motifs, reinforcing its community connection.

With a focus on sustainability, the facility features solar power, rainwater harvesting, and eco-friendly infrastructure. The MUHC stands as a symbol of cultural pride, resilience, and healthcare excellence, set to serve future generations with modern healthcare while honoring tradition.
