Shanghai Bund Memorial Museum translates the spatial typology of traditional lane-house courtyards into its design through site-specific adaptation. Vertically, the lane courtyards that once formed the core of Shanghai’s daily life are reinterpreted as variably shaped open-air courtyards. These courtyards enhance connectivity between interior and exterior spaces, channeling natural elements like light, wind, and rain into the memorial areas to create a ritual atmosphere. Horizontally, the sloped rooftop platform is directly connected to the Bund promenade, providing public access for rest and Huangpu River views, embodying urban publicness. The extended roof form also responds to the historic buildings along the Bund, creating a distinctive architectural landscape. The project was designed by “Kai Wen, led by Tongji University visiting professor Jenchieh Hung / HAS Design and Research”.
