Aileen Avenue Precinct, in suburban South Caulfield, Melbourne, offers a multi-residential affordable housing alternative for lone or pair occupants. Each block experiments with different modes of sharing between direct neighbours.
Firstly, two adjacent apartments share a spare room, an undefined adaptable space such as a guest room, office, or art studio. The second share a kitchen, while allowing for private living and dining. The final test shares all communal facilities with equal private amenity. Community is expressed from a micro to macro level, vertically in each block through communal rooftop areas, and precinct-wide including spaces such as a co-working area.
