St Martins Lane

St. Martins Lane in Melbourne’s City serves as a compelling case study of vertical family living through adaptive reuse, addressing the challenges of densification and population growth. This project breathes new life into a confined corner plot, skillfully blending heritage preservation with thoughtful enhancements to create a harmonious living space. By reimagining the entrance and introducing a glazed circulation stair, the design fosters community connection while eliminating superfluous corridors.

A standout feature of this project is the rooftop deck and garden, offering a tranquil sanctuary that benefits from the surrounding foliage and providing a connection to nature. The striking profile and perforated metal cladding of the new structure pay homage to the historic brick bond of the original building, resulting in a visually captivating composition that seamlessly integrates the old and the new.

Sustainability is embedded through rainwater harvesting, rooftop gardens featuring edible plants and the conscious use of durable, recycled Australian timbers. These choices not only minimise the environmental impact but also contribute to the long-term resilience of the structure.

St. Martins Lane stands as a testament to the possibilities of urban density and functional design. It serves as a shining example of how thoughtful and sustainable architectural interventions can rejuvenate compact city environments while preserving their historical significance.
