Alpine Lodge

Perched on a Mount Hotham ridgeline, Alpine Lodge is organised as a vertical sequence responding to the demands and rituals of alpine living. Across four levels, the home moves through spaces of recovery, rest and gathering before culminating in panoramic living above. Throughout, the interior balances enclosure and outlook, using tonal restraint, robust materials and calibrated light to create warmth and refuge within an exposed mountain landscape.

Arrival begins at the ski-level basement, where Western-Red Cedar, bluestone paving and crafted joinery establish a warm transition from mountain to refuge. Above, an onsen-inspired wellness level forms the centre of winter recovery, layering changing, bathing, sauna and restoration spaces in smoked eucalyptus, corten steel, mosaic tile and stone.

Sleeping levels are cocooned in timber veneers and warm flooring, creating quiet retreats. Bathrooms shift subtly in tone and material to reflect the landscape, while the main suite maintains a strong connection to the horizon through low joinery, framed views and a pivoting mirror capturing shifting light.

At the uppermost level, planning and glazing were reoriented to prioritise expansive views. Kitchen and dining occupy the glazed corner while the lounge gathers around a central fireplace, framing the landscape and supporting the seasonal rhythms of family life.
